Green Things In Wintertime

"Things cannot grow underneath
the winter snow."
Yet our love grew--

deep deep down that you know you can't forget.

Curling around one another.
You're my aspen bark
protecting my sweetness inside.
The dim light radiating
to where I lie with my head
burrowed by your side.

You're the only man to bring me flowers.
I tried so hard to keep them living.
In sleep I dive down deep among
the mildew waters and drag their
bursting lungs out
out to kiss the petals that I wish
would be your lips.
I held the vase and hugged the crystal
I buried my face and thought of only you.

The softness of your smell lingers here
far away I went, but as I pull folded shirt
and shirt I can lift them and you're still near.

My shield from the bitter winter wind
and my protection from myself; you
hold me and you're my bark to keep my sap
from freezing.

We can sink under the mounds of snow together
and still create our own Spring.
Our own life, our own growing time.
Things aren't supposed to grow yet
but my heart has been furrowed
and you've broken the frozen ground.

I gave you one last hug as I pulled my bags away
from your hands. And you uncurled around me.
But something here does grow
and grow between us.

I love the repetition of the theme and word "growing" or "grow." I also really enjoyed the intro: "Things cannot grow underneath the winter snow."

Amy, I love this poem! I also like the intro, and the line, "You're my aspen bark /protecting my sweetness inside." I also like the stand alone line about how deep deep down...this is just great! I hope you are doing well in Africa! I miss you!

i agree with MJ, the aspen bark is one of my favorite lines too! i like how you talk about love like the growth of a tree/plant, "curling around one another"

i hope you're doing well in Africa! I miss our coffee & editing times at starbucks!
